Melrose and Mott Haven form Bronx Community District 1, the southernmost tip of the Bronx running from the Harlem River at East 138th Street north to roughly East 163rd Street, bounded by the Bronx Kill and East River to the south and east. The district includes Port Morris along the industrial waterfront, the dense residential blocks of Mott Haven, and Melrose stretching toward the Third Avenue commercial corridor. Housing stock is predominantly pre-war and post-war brick walk-ups and NYCHA developments.

The area has seen growing investment with the emergence of the South Bronx arts scene centered around the Port Morris warehouses and the Third Avenue retail strip. Major anchors include the Hostos Community College campus, Lincoln Hospital, and Bruckner Boulevard. The neighborhood is among the most densely populated and lower-income in the Bronx, with significant Latino and Black communities.
