Search permits, HPD violations, and NYPD complaint data for Mott Haven and Port Morris in the South Bronx.
Search this neighborhoodMott Haven, in the southwest Bronx, takes its name from Jordan Lawrence Mott, who bought the land in 1849 for his iron works. A vestige of the ironworks can still be seen just west of the Third Avenue Bridge on East 134th Street. Elaborate brownstones began to rise along Alexander Avenue by the 1890s, known as Doctors' Row and the Irish Fifth Avenue, and Judges' Row on East 134th Street also dates from that period. Three historic districts, the Mott Haven Historic District, the Mott Haven East Historic District, and the Bertine Block Historic District, preserve these rows. The official area covered here, NYC Planning's Mott Haven-Port Morris, also includes the industrial Port Morris waterfront along the Harlem River and the Bronx Kill.
St. Ann's Episcopal Church on St. Ann's Avenue and Saint Jerome Catholic Church on Alexander Avenue are among the neighborhood's historic churches, and the Mott Haven Library on East 140th Street is a neighborhood branch of the New York Public Library. St. Mary's Park provides a hillside green space in the center of the area, and the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presents theater, film, and music on the Grand Concourse. The Third Avenue and Willis Avenue Bridges link the Bronx to Manhattan across the Harlem River.
