About Loop

The Loop is Chicago's central business district and community area, bounded by the Chicago River on the north and west, Lake Michigan on the east, and Roosevelt Road and the railroad tracks to the south. Named for the elevated train loop that encircles its core, the neighborhood is the commercial and cultural heart of the city, home to iconic architecture, major corporate headquarters, and world-class cultural institutions.

The Loop contains some of the most architecturally significant buildings in the world, including the Willis Tower, the Rookery, the Marquette Building, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Millennium Park and its Cloud Gate sculpture (the Bean) have become defining landmarks. The neighborhood has seen significant residential growth since the early 2000s, with numerous residential high-rise conversions and new construction. State Street, Michigan Avenue, and Wacker Drive are among the principal commercial corridors.
