About South Loop

The South Loop is a neighborhood spanning parts of the Near South Side and Loop community areas, located immediately south of Chicago's central business district. The area has experienced dramatic residential growth since the late 1990s, transforming from a largely industrial and rail yard landscape into a district of high-rise condos, apartment towers, and townhome developments.

The neighborhood stretches roughly from Congress Parkway (Ida B. Wells Drive) south to Cermak Road (22nd Street), bounded by Lake Michigan and Grant Park to the east and the Dan Ryan Expressway to the west. The South Loop is defined by its proximity to major cultural institutions: the Museum Campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium), Soldier Field, and Grant Park. The neighborhood also includes the historic Printer's Row district and Columbia College Chicago.
