Search this neighborhoodSouth Park is the historic Black neighborhood south of downtown, centered on John Chavis Memorial Park and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, with the South Park and South Central neighborhood associations registered here. About two fifths of its land is Residential-10 and a fifth is office mixed use.
Chavis Park and its Allan Herschell carousel, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gardens, the Walnut Creek Wetland Center, the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium and Meymandi Concert Hall, and Ligon and Carnage middle schools are inside it. GoRaleigh routes 5, 17, 19, 20A, 20B and 21 serve the area. Shaw University, which has its own campus police, is cut out of the boundary. The boundary is built from census block groups, so it follows streets and creeks but is not an association or historic-district line.
