Jamaica & St. Albans
Neighborhood Intelligence

Jamaica, St. Albans, and Hollis form Queens Community District 12, the most populous community district in Queens and a cornerstone of African American life in New York City. Jamaica serves as a major commercial and transit hub — home to the Jamaica AirTrain terminal, a dense bus network, and Jamaica Center — while St. Albans and Hollis to the south and east are predominantly single-family homeowner communities with deep roots in Black middle-class history.

The neighborhood is closely associated with a long legacy of Black cultural and civic achievement; St. Albans in particular was historically home to jazz musicians and civil rights figures. Today the area is largely owner-occupied with well-maintained one- and two-family homes, local retail along Merrick Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue, and strong community institutions including Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and York College (CUNY).
