Hell's Kitchen, also called Clinton, is the stretch of Midtown West between Eighth Avenue and the Hudson River, running from roughly West 41st Street up to West 58th Street. It was long a working-class and largely Irish-American neighborhood, and its Ninth Avenue and Tenth Avenue corridors are known for small, inexpensive restaurants, delis, and bars from cuisines around the world. Since the 1980s the neighborhood has seen substantial new residential development, while a long-established Hispanic-American population and a large LGBTQ community remain part of its character.

Many blocks west of Eighth Avenue are lined with older walk-up apartment buildings, and zoning generally limits new buildings on the blocks north of West 43rd Street to six stories. The neighborhood has long been home to working actors, and the Actors Studio, Theatre Row, Playwrights Horizons, and the subsidized-housing complex Manhattan Plaza sit within it. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is moored at Pier 86 on the river, and DeWitt Clinton Park fills the blocks between Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues.
