Bedford Stuyvesant
Neighborhood Intelligence

Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Community District 3, is one of the largest African American communities in the United States and a center of Brooklyn's cultural and political history. The district is bounded roughly by Flushing Avenue to the north, Atlantic Avenue to the south, Broadway to the east, and Classon Avenue to the west. Its streetscape is defined by one of New York City's most extensive concentrations of intact Victorian brownstones and rowhouses, many dating to the late 19th century.

Bed-Stuy experienced significant disinvestment through the mid-20th century before emerging as a focus of community development and, more recently, rapid gentrification pressures. The Fulton Street and Nostrand Avenue commercial corridors serve as the district's main commercial spines. Key institutions include Boys and Girls High School, Restoration Plaza, and numerous community development organizations that have shaped the neighborhood's trajectory for decades.
