About Uptown

Uptown is a community area on Chicago's North Side, stretching from Irving Park Road north to Foster Avenue along the lakefront. The neighborhood was once the entertainment capital of the North Side, and its legacy lives on in landmark venues like the Green Mill Jazz Club, the Aragon Ballroom, the Riviera Theatre, and the ornate but long-shuttered Uptown Theatre. These venues cluster near the intersection of Lawrence and Broadway, the neighborhood's commercial heart.

Uptown is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago by income, race, and ethnicity. Its housing stock ranges from large vintage courtyard apartments and SROs to newer condo developments. The area has undergone significant change in recent years, with new residential construction along the lakefront and near the Wilson Red Line station, which was rebuilt in 2018.
