About Pilsen

Pilsen is a neighborhood on Chicago's Lower West Side, long recognized as the heart of the city's Mexican-American community. Named by Czech immigrants after the city of Plzeň in Bohemia, the neighborhood has been shaped by successive waves of immigration. Its streets are lined with colorful murals, many running along the CTA Pink Line viaduct on 16th Street, making it one of the largest outdoor galleries in the country.

The neighborhood stretches from 16th Street south to the Stevenson Expressway, with the Dan Ryan Expressway to the east and Ashland Avenue to the west. Pilsen's 18th Street corridor is the commercial and cultural center, home to the National Museum of Mexican Art, Thalia Hall, and a dense concentration of taquerías, bakeries, and independent shops.
