About Old Town

Old Town is a historic neighborhood within the Near North Side community area, centered on Wells Street just north of Division Street. One of Chicago's oldest residential districts, Old Town features a remarkable collection of Victorian-era cottages, rowhouses, and mansions that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The Old Town Triangle Historic District preserves many of these structures along its distinctive non-grid street pattern.

The neighborhood is best known as the home of The Second City comedy club, where performers from Bill Murray and John Belushi to Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert launched their careers. The Wells Street commercial corridor supports a mix of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. Old Town sits between the Gold Coast to the east and Lincoln Park to the north, making it one of the most walkable and well-connected neighborhoods in the city.
