About New City

New City is a community area on Chicago's Southwest Side, best known for its Back of the Yards neighborhood, named for its location behind the former Union Stock Yards that once made Chicago the meatpacking capital of the world. The community area is bounded by Pershing Road (39th Street) to the north, Garfield Boulevard (55th Street) to the south, the railroad tracks and Halsted Street to the east, and Western Avenue to the west.

New City's housing stock includes brick two-flats, bungalows, and workers' cottages dating to the stockyard era. The neighborhood has a large Mexican and Mexican-American population and active commercial corridors along 47th Street and Ashland Avenue. The former stockyard site is now an industrial park. The neighborhood's community organizations, including the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (founded in 1939 by Saul Alinsky), have a long history of civic activism.
