Riverdale
Neighborhood Intelligence

Riverdale is the hilly northwest corner of the Bronx, overlooking the Hudson River and bordered to the north by Yonkers and to the east by Van Cortlandt Park and Broadway. Before residential development, it was a nineteenth-century estate district where many of Manhattan's wealthy built country houses, and the area has a more suburban character than most of the Bronx, with large houses, wooded streets, and apartment towers along the river. The official area covered here, NYC Planning's Riverdale-Spuyten Duyvil, also includes the Spuyten Duyvil section at its southern end.

Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center on a Hudson River estate whose past tenants included Theodore Roosevelt's family and Mark Twain, is the area's best-known destination. Riverdale Park runs along the river, and Manhattan University (formerly Manhattan College) and the University of Mount Saint Vincent are the neighborhood's two university campuses. RiverSpring Living, long known as the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, and Riverdale Presbyterian Church are long-established institutions. Riverdale Avenue is its primary north-south thoroughfare.
