Crown Heights South & Wingate
Neighborhood Intelligence

Crown Heights South and Wingate form Brooklyn Community District 9, occupying the area south of Eastern Parkway between Flatbush Avenue to the west and New York Avenue to the east. This district covers the southern half of Crown Heights proper and the Wingate neighborhood, a quiet residential area around Wingate Park. The housing stock is predominantly early-to-mid 20th century limestone and brick rowhouses and two-family homes, more modest in scale than the grander brownstones of Crown Heights North.

The district's main commercial corridors run along Nostrand Avenue and Utica Avenue, which serve the neighborhood's predominantly Caribbean and African American population. Medgar Evers College, part of the City University of New York system, anchors the district's western edge near Flatbush Avenue. The area borders East Flatbush to the south and Flatbush to the west along Ocean Avenue, with relatively stable residential character compared to the more rapidly changing areas to the north.
