Is Downtown Safe? Crime & Safety Data

Crimes cover the Downtown neighborhood (the boundary outlined on the map), over the last 12 months. Open housing notices are counted within roughly a half-mile of the center. Crime is compared per resident (rate), so a large, busy area can have a high total but an average or below-average rate; open housing notice counts are compared to the average Baltimore neighborhood. Source: Open Baltimore (City of Baltimore open data). BPD’s public crime data is its NIBRS Group A offense table, and drug and narcotic offenses (about 40 in nearly five years), most weapons offenses (about 100) and prostitution are essentially absent from it, so counts here leave out those offense types. Locations are rounded to the block. Campus police (Johns Hopkins Homewood, Morgan State, Loyola University Maryland, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Coppin State), the National Park Service (Fort McHenry), the Maryland Port Administration (Seagirt and Dundalk Marine Terminals), the Maryland Transportation Authority and transit police handle their own property and are not in this feed, and Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County have their own police departments, so addresses just across the city line are not covered.
